Enhertu is a drug that could extend thousands of lives. But it was rejected for use on the NHS in 2024 for being too expensive.   

Since then, thousands of people have missed out on the drug. And many have died. Robbed of the extra time it could have given to them.

We now have a chance to stop anybody else missing out. But we need to act quickly, because the people who need this drug don’t have time to wait. They need Enhertu. Now.

• Why is now our chance?

  Since Enhertu for HER2-low metastatic breast cancer was rejected for use on the NHS in 2024, the government has raised the cost-effectiveness threshold used by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) to determine whether drugs offer good value for money and should be made available on the NHS.

  These new thresholds came into force in April. Meaning the NHS can now spend more on drugs.

  We now need the drug companies (Daiichi Sankyo and AstraZeneca), NHS England and NICE to seize this chance, show flexibility and urgently come up with a deal that gets this drug to the people who desperately need it. You can help us make sure they do.

• What about Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland?

  In England, the organisation that decides whether drugs can be made available on the NHS is the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, usually known as NICE.

  They make recommendations that apply in England, but these decisions are usually adopted by Wales and Northern Ireland - so when Enhertu was rejected in England - that meant people in Wales and Northern Ireland missed out too.

  Getting Enhertu approved by NICE in England should mean it soon becomes available in Wales and Northern Ireland as well.

  Scotland makes their own decisions through their equivalent of NICE, the Scottish Medicines Consortium (SMC). The SMC approved Enhertu for use on the NHS in Scotland in December 2023, creating a postcode lottery across the UK.

It’s cruel that my life has a price tag, and that price tag could see a young girl lose her mum sooner as a result. Every month I’m alive is another month closer to the hope of new treatment. But what’s the point of hope if I can’t access it. It’s torturous.
